You have probably heard the saying that success in your business is a numbers game. And that is true, but one of the best Network Marketing Prospecting Tips I could ever give you is to think of that saying this way instead: “success in your business is a numbers game IF you play the numbers correctly.”
The more people you share your business with the right way the more people will join, the more people that join the more success you are going to see… it really is as simple as that.
The number one tip I could ever give you is go get as many No’s as you can. The person who get’s the most No’s wins at this game. Get addicted to getting as many No’s as you can, because the more No’s you get, guess what else happens? Yup the more Yes’s you will also get.
As such the most important component to your success is getting your business presentation in front of as many people as you possibly can and continuing to do that.
So the big question for network marketers than becomes where do you find these prospect to share your business with?
It’s a very valid question and one I struggled with as well.
The answer to that question really depends on you and how you want to build your business.
Prospects are literally everywhere. The key is using recruiting methods that work, that you are comfortable enough with to continue doing on a daily bases, AND using methods that are duplicatable.
If you find a method you do not like doing you will not do it for long.
If you find a method that will not duplicate your business will not grow as this is a business of duplication and as such there is no sense doing non duplicatable activities because in the end you are just wasting your time. (there is one exception to this rule that I talk about at the end of this post)
Network marketing is a business that you can not build on your own. You need a downline of people who will also do things. You need to talk to people and you need to recruit people.
If you do not want to talk to people you are in the wrong business. There are other business models out there where you do not need to do these things, such as affiliate marketing, and if you want to do that instead of network marketing I get that and respect that.
Although my number one love is Network Marketing I also enjoy affiliate marketing and build businesses with it as well. If you prefer Affiliate Marketing than do that instead, it’s your life, in order to have success you have to enjoy what you are doing. If you like talking to people Network Marketing is the way to go, if you prefer technical stuff like Internet Marketing than perhaps Affiliate Marketing is the way to go.
OK are you still here? Perfect, that means you are a Network Marketer so let’s get you building a downline….
Here my Top 4 Prospecting Tips and Methods to Build a Big Business
Tip #1) Warm Market
Yup the ol’ warm market! It makes no sense whatsoever not to share your opportunity with the people you already know! Now relax this is not the only prospecting method I recommend unlike some of the old school guys out there. But it is an important one and the place you should start.
Is it going to be where you get most of your new team members from? No it’s not. But it is where we start and where we learn and how we start to build duplication.
And why wouldn’t you go to people who already know like and trust you?
If you approach them the right way you are not going to try to sell them anything, you are not going to pressure them, you are not going to chase them, you are not going to make them feel awkward and you are not going to lose them as a friend or family.
You are simply going to ask them if they are open to taking a look at your opportunity, if they are great, now share the presentation with them via a third party tool. If they are not open than that is also great because now you know.
Something along the following is all you need to say:
“Hey Bob, been awhile, trust all is well. Listen I’m just going to cut right to the chase, I’m contacting you because I’m doing this thing, I have this side project, and I don’t know if you’d be open to it at all but I can share it with you. If you’re open, great. If not, no big deal.”
It is really that easy.
And the real powerful component of the warm market is, everyone you recruit has an existing warm market of 200 – 500 people (or more)! Which than creates duplication in your business.
If you do not promote sharing to your warm market you are missing out on a boat load of growth in your organization and I have serious doubts if you will actually build a network marketing downline.
There is a reason the big guns like Eric Worre, Tim Sales and Randy Gage promote this method… it works!
Tip #2) Luke Warm Market.
Meaning the people you meet along the way as you are living life.
For you Sesame Street fans… you could call this the Sesame Street Recruiting Method… remember that song they use to sing:
“It’s the people that you meet as your walking down the street, it’s the people that you meet each day”… I’m actually singing the damn song in my head as I type this lol.
Now I am not talking about the “hide in the bushes and jump any prospect who walks by” approach…
And I am definitely NOT talking about the 3-foot rule. I have never done that and never would.
What I am simply saying is that you are going to meet people as you live your life, be on the look out for sharp people as you live your life.
I would bet that most people meet at least 2 – 3 new people every day. So for the sake of an argument let’s call it 5 people a week. So every month that is 20 new people you meet just living life at a minimum. In a year that is 240 new people just living your life like you do now.
The secret is not to hit them up with your business right than and there. What I recommend is after you meet them simply add them to Facebook or LinkedIn and build the relationship that way.
Which leads to our next prospecting tip…
Tip #3) Social Media
The emergence of social media has become an incredible opportunity for network marketers. I believe it is a serious game changer for network marketers. There is no reason why with the billions of people on social media that anyone should ever complain about not having prospects to share their business with.
You can use any of the popular social media sites to meet people and recruit them into your business. Facebook (my favorite), LinkedIn, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, etc.
Simply pick one and get on it, search out the type of person you like to target, and become friends with them.
I am not saying you have to become besties, and I am not one for trying to build rapport in sleazy sales kind of way. You know what I mean. I do not use the FORM method… family, occupation, recreation and whatever the heck the M stands for.
I think that is too difficult and not duplicatable and I believe it has been done so much that people see it a mile away. People can tell you are being fake and just asking about “little Johnny” because you are going to hit them up with something.
I think you should be more upfront and direct with your prospect.
Here is a quick overview of what to do on social media…
- Go out and find groups you have interests in. Whether that is canoeing, fishing, fitness, pets, it does not matter. Join the groups (shoot for 5 groups), contribute in the groups daily, provide value, comment on other peoples posts, like their posts, make your own posts, etc.
- Now friend up some these people. Not everyone. Find the quality people. Look at their profile, see if they would be a good prospect. Now add 5 – 10 of them a day. Spread it out through out the day. Do not add all 10 at one shot as the platform might think you are a spammer and punish you. Do it naturally like you are really making friends and Facebook or whatever platform you are on will be more than fine with it.
- Send them a message when you add them. “Hey Bob, we are members of this group, sent you a friends request, how’s things?”
Now you can either wait awhile and build a relationship over time, by continuing to have a nice conversation (not sales oriented), by engaging on what they post, by them seeing you post and engaging on it and when you feel comfortable asking them to look at your business like I showed you how to do with the warm market.
Or you can get right to the point after they reply to your message and say something like:
“I know we don’t know each other, I see you are in New York I am looking to expand my business into New York, would you be open to take a look at what I am doing, if not no big deal.”
This choice is yours and what you are comfortable with.
Both methods work.
Friends first takes longer but you will get a higher Yes rate of people looking at your business.
But with the direct method as Jim Rohn says “you can make up in numbers what you lack in skills.” So I personally like getting right to the chase and being upfront why I am adding them as a friend. (I might wait a day or two and message a few times, or comment on their stuff, but I don’t wait long)
Either way do this daily and your pipeline will fill up and you will recruit people and the best part is this is duplicatable and your team can do it also…
Now let’s take a look at the next method of prospecting that seems to be the buzz word these days…
Tip #4) Attraction Marketing
The last method we are going to look at today is attraction marketing.
Attraction Marketing burst onto the scene in full force a few years back with Mike Dillard and Magnetic sponsoring.
So since I am a straight shooter I am going to be very upfront with you on this method of recruiting.
First I will say that yes it definitely works for generating leads for your network marketing.
Secondly I will immediately say it is not “very” duplicatable.
So this is where things get tricky when it comes to building a downline with this recruiting method.
It is human nature to shy away from what “appears” to be the difficult tasks and instead lean toward what “appears” to be the easy tasks.
And talking to people about a home based business “appears” to be the hard task, where as recruiting on the internet “appears” to be the easy stuff.
So if you focus the majority of your time on the internet your team will want to because they will see you doing it and they will not only think that is the secret to success they will think it is the easy thing to do.
They will “think” they will not have to talk to their friends and family. (But as you now know they will still need to)
It’s the whole pain vs pleasure deal. People shy away from things they perceive will bring them pain and lean towards things they perceive will give them pleasure.
And in their minds talking to people about their business they perceive as being painful. While using the internet to generate leads is perceived as being easy (giving pleasure).
So I am not saying do not do Attraction Marketing, because it is powerful and it does work if done the right way.
What I am saying is do not do it only. In fact do not spend the majority of your time doing it.
Do not let your downline think that is all you do. And if some of them do it, do not let them spend most of their time doing it.
You have to get strict on this as a leader.
Engage in the other recruiting and sponsoring methods. Promote and train on them and show your results using them.
I would go so far as even to say do not promote attraction marketing to your downline. Only train on it or discuss it with those who approach you about it.
And when you do train it to people explain exactly what I just explained to you.
A good motto to live by is spend 70% of your time doing the other activities we just talked about. Which are “active prospecting” methods. Then if you or your team want to do Attraction Marketing make sure you spend no more than the remaining 30% of your time doing so.
What I just said is Crucial!!
