Network Marketing Mentorship what exactly is it? Do you even need a mentor or should you go at this business on your own? Should you listen only to your up line or follow the trainings of the gurus you find online? And if so which online gurus should you follow?
Read on and learn grasshopper… because today I am going to answer all of these questions for you and more.
My goal in this post is to help you determine if you should be listening to your upline on how to build your business; and if so should you only listen to them or should you find mentors online to learn from.
I will also explain how to tell if the guru you are looking at learning from is legitimate and will help your business or not.
What Exactly is Network Marketing Mentorship?
Obviously the basics are finding someone who will take you under their wing and guide you along the path of success. Showing you what works and what does not.
Sometimes learning what does not work is as important as learning what does work.
There are so many pitfalls out there, so many self-proclaimed guru’s promising overnight success in order to get you to purchase their garbage little book, course or software; that you need to be able to recognize them and learn to stay clear.
There is a massive industry of people out there who are simply “mining the miners”. Trying to make money off of the people doing the work of building a network marketing business.
Now do not get me wrong, I am ALL for knowledgeable people providing training; obviously I am as this is what this blog is all about; BUT it is important to be aware that there are wolves in sheep’s clothing out there not interested in your success and are just looking for your money. And believe me there are thousands of these scammers out there.
So… knowing who is full of BS and who is not is just as important as knowing what works.
I Had Great Mentors
I am huge on mentorship probably because I was so incredibly lucky starting out in this industry to have been mentored directly by Eric Worre and Randy Gage; they were both my direct upline and worked directly with me, which to be honest at the time I was clueless and did not have a freaking clue how lucky I was.
When I first got into the business I had know idea who they were. They were just two guys who seemed to have accomplished what I wanted to accomplish so I listened to them and did exactly what they told me to.
The knowledge these two giants of our industry provided to me was without a doubt a huge part of the reason I was able to have such good success right out of the gates in this business. They knew how to build the business and they imparted this wisdom to me and it worked in a big way.
There is no way I would have had the type of success I did if I had of just picked a company and tried to figure it out on my own without guidance from people who knew what they were doing.
So I highly recommend mentorship. Get mentored! Find the people who can help you get to where you want to go and learn from them.
Don’t Be a Hero
Do NOT try to go at this business on your own. Lose your ego. Do not think you know how to build a huge organization. Be coachable.
If you are new to the network marketing or the MLM industry than you are honestly clueless on how to build this business. If you have never had success in this biz than you are also clueless on how to build this business.
In this industry the old saying “If it is to be it is up to ME” is garbage. There is a small truth to it from the stand point that you are the only one who can motivate yourself to do what is required; but outside of that you need others to help and guide and train you along the way.
This business is very much a team business and you need to forget what you think you know about this business and start with a clean slate. Learn everything you can from those who know what they are doing.
Proper mentorship will be the corner stone to your success. The foundation upon what you will build a large organization.
So the first place to look for a good mentor should be your upline… so let’s start there.
Should You Listen to Your Upline?
Now this is a tricky and controversial topic. But as you will learn about me I never shy away from controversy, I might even enjoy it a bit too much if I am honest.
Here is the problem with our business as I see it. Here is why so many people detest our industry.
Most network marketers come across as lunatics….
Yup complete lunatics, right out of their damn minds.
They run around telling their friends that they can “get rich” with the new thing they joined. That ALL they have to do is get a couple of their friends to join and they will get a couple friends and so on and so forth and they will all be swimming in money in no time.
Or they start running around hounding all of their friends and family to buy their miracle lifesaving product recently discovered in the vast jungle of South America; that will allow them to live forever and will even make their hair grow back.
Or they join the Spam Jam Clan and jump on social media spamming their Facebook, Instagram, twitter or whatever other social media platform they are on. (please don’t do that!)
They have know idea what they are doing… they are chasing their friends and family; spewing garbage at them and as a result people have learned to detest this industry. And who can blame them.
They Were Trained Wrong (or not at all)
Why do most network marketers do this?
Because it was what their upline told them to do.
Their upline was just someone like them who was clueless on how to build the business and they shared their clueless knowledge to the new person they brought in and so on and so forth down the line it goes.
New recruit after new recruit running around like lunatics.
Should you listen to your upline.
If they have had good success than yes… and if people they have shared their knowledge with have had good success than yes… if not than no way!
It really is as simple as that.
Has the person you are listening to had success? Real success. Are they living the life you want to live? Have they accomplished what you want to accomplish? And have they successfully shown others how to do the same?
If not than politely ignore what they are telling you and simply move up the line of your organization and find someone who has had this success and has shown others how to and learn from them.
What About Online Guru’s?
And here we go into another controversial subject.
Uplines are notorious for being protective of their downlines. And who can blame them? I get it. In fact, I never like when my downline ventures out and try’s to learn new strategies for building the business from other self-proclaimed leaders.
Well as I have said there are all kinds of scammers out there. People who are looking to simply make a buck off of you or recruit you into their deal
They will promise you everything. They will tell you what you want to hear.
We all want to have instant success… we all want to be able to build a downline overnight and on auto pilot.
Instant gratification with as minimal work as possible is appealing to all of us… it is human nature.
And none of these things really work… sure some of them may make you a few dollars but in the end they all fall apart and take you down with them.
Good upline leaders know that there are many pitfalls and traps that you as a new builder could fall into.
If you are looking to build a network marketing business there are proven methods of doing so and a good upline and good mentors will show them to you.
So How Do You Find a Good Mentor?
First understand how a true network marketing business is built and than find leaders who are teaching those methods.
First understand that success takes time. This is not get rich quick. There is no overnight success. Everyone who you see on stage has a back ground story, the success did not just happen for them overnight. So stay clear of people promising you overnight riches… run the other way.
Secondly understand this is a business of duplication. That means that anything and everything you do to build your business must be duplicatable. Meaning anyone and everyone has to be able to do it. Which means the activities you do need to be simple.
This is because in order to build a large downline you need others to help you. You will not be able to build it on your own. You need people coming in who will also be able to bring people in and you need their people to be able to bring people in and so on and so forth.
If the activities that you teach them or try to have them do are difficult they will quit. This is a volunteer army. People can leave at any time.
Duplication is the Key
So any time you are looking at a training from a guru or a method of building your business do not ask yourself whether it will work, but rather will it duplicate.
If it is too expensive it will NOT duplicate
If it is too complicated it will NOT duplicate
Here is an Extreme Example of what I am talking about:
Yes putting a billboard ad on the corner of Times Square in New York city might work to get you new recruits, but what happens to those new recruits?
The way they join the business is how they think they have to build the business. (what I just said is a big deal!)
It does not matter what you tell them. If they see you doing something different than what you are telling them to do they will think that is the real secret of how to become a success.
So they are obviously not going to be able to afford a billboard ad of that nature.
They are certainly not going to listen to you when you tell them to go talk to some friends and family because that was not how you brought them in, so guess what?
They do nothing, become frustrated and quit!
Simply because the act of putting a billboard ad up might have worked but it was not duplicatable.
So long story short, I am all for mentors. I am always looking at what others are teaching and doing. And there was a time I fell for a lot of the scams, so I am guarded now and I no longer fall for the garbage training out there.
I now ask myself is this person trying to sell an instant gratification deal. Are they trying to tell me I can build a business without effort (or minimal effort) and that I can build it overnight? If the answer is yes I run the other way.
And I ask myself is this method they are teaching duplicatable? Can everyone in my downline do this? Or is it do complicated and costly for the average person to do in the time they have allotted to build their business?
So to Recap
Yes get a mentor, they will help you on your journey to become a professional network marketer much quicker.
Yes learn from mentors online, but be smart. Do not fall for the get rich quick nonsense.
Look to your organization, look to your upline and find the successful people and do what they did. Find the online mentors who are legitimate. Find the ones who are promoting duplicatable proven activities.
