It was not too many years ago that I had run out of people I knew to prospect and I ended up buying a network marketing lead list from a broker in order to try and recruit more team members.
I figured when I bought this list that this is it. This is great.
I had just purchased a list of leads that was supposed to be loaded with tons of people who had raised their hands and asked to be contacted about a network marketing opportunity.
I thought to myself man oh man am I going to recruit a pile of these people. My downline is going to absolutely explode.
I can even remember when I was buying the list wondering why more network marketers simply did not do the same thing. How could it get any easier?
I mean come on, these people want to be contacted about a MLM business, it only makes sense right?
MLM Cold Lead Lists Are Terrible
Man was I wrong and oh boy did I figure out very quickly why the leaders on my team at the time had warned me not to waste my money on buying leads.
Calling them was one of the worst business building experiences I have ever had. These people were not serious about joining a home based business in any way shape or form.
Most would hang the phone up on you. A lot of them would waste your time simply talking up a great game and than doing nothing.
Take if from me do not go down this path, you will regret it I assure you.
Instead, you want to…
Learn How to Generate Your Own Lead List
If you have been around this industry for anytime at all you have probably heard it referred to as “relationship marketing”.
It’s a great name for the industry because that is exactly what it is.
Your success or lack of it has a direct correlation to your relationships with the people you know or the people you are going to get to know.
People join opportunities with the people they know, like and trust.
This is one of the reasons that the cold lead lists are no good. The people do not know you from Adam. They don’t like you because you are calling them and sound like a telemarketer and they certainly don’t trust you.
If you want to become a top recruiter in network marketing you have to learn to generate your own leads.
I train primarily on 3 lead generation strategies:
- The people you already know
- The people you meet on social media
- The leads you generate using internet marketing strategies.
Let’s take a look at each of these briefly and than I’ll point you to blog posts where you can learn how to master each of them…
Lead Generation Strategy #1 – Warm Market
The people you already know prior to joining your MLM business are considered your warm market.
You absolutely want to start with these people. It only makes sense to do so, and it will be the foundation of your business moving forward.
I know some people are nervous or apprehensive to talk to their friends and family about their business; if you feel that way you need to get over that quickly.
Working your warm market is crucial for the following reasons:
Reason #1 – It’s the Easiest Market to Work.
Where most people go wrong in this business is they do not understand how to build it correctly.
Most people think network marketing is sales, and as a result they go out and try to sell their opportunity or product to their friends and family.
Sales is an industry and skill set all on its own and it takes time to get good at it. This is why we do NOT sell in network marketing. We are not sales people.
The people who try to sell to their friends and family fail miserably
All we do to build our businesses is share the opportunity with our leads.
We simply ask them if they are open to taking a look at it and if they are we provide them with tools created by the company designed to do all of the selling for us.
After they look at it we follow up with them to see if it is for them.
That truly is all that is involved and that is why working your warm market is the easiest way to start your business. The people you already know will in most cases do you the favor of taking a look at it for you.
If you are with the right company and team, the tools you use will definitely work to recruit a good percentage of your friends and family into the business.
Reason #2 – It’s Your Training Grounds to Learn How to Build Your Business.
Believe it or not it does not matter one little bit if you ever recruit a single person from your warm market. Your warm market is finite. You are going to run out of people on it.
You will spend the majority of your career working the cold market from the leads you generate.
But there will be enough people in your warm market to help you learn how to prospect the right way.
It’s where you get trained. It’s your on job training. It’s where you learn how to use all of the tools, how to approach people correctly, how to follow up and close, etc.
You want to know how to prospect correctly before you head out and start working cold leads.
Reason #3 – It’s The Most Duplicatable Market to Work
There is an old saying that if it is to be it is up to me.
That saying does not hold true in network marketing! You can not become a success on your own in this industry. You must have a team or downline filled with people who are also working the business and having success.
There is a buzzword that I have really only ever heard used in direct sales which is “duplication’!
The basics of it are that any business building activity you do must be able to duplicate.
Meaning anyone on your team must be able to do it and see success doing so.
Your team is going to do what you do. However, you build your business your team is going to think that is what they have to do.
There is no other method that is as duplicatable as your warm market. Every single person on your team can ask their friends and family if they are open to doing them a favor and taking a look at their business.
If you build this strategy into the culture of your team you are going to build a very strong foundation and a successful organization.
Reason #4 – It Can Be Very Profitable if You Work it Correctly.
I am such a fan of this market because I used it myself and I was very successful doing so.
Before I ever started working the cold market I had already created a 6 figure income, all from the people I knew.
I personally know of countless people who have done the same thing.
But there is no question you want to learn how to work this market the right way before you begin. You have one shot at approaching these people the right way so you do not want to blow it.
Here are a couple of blog posts to show you how to have big success with your warm leads:
When you have spoken to everyone you know it is time to move to social media and start generating leads there…
Lead Generation Strategy #2 – Social Media
This is definitely where you and your team members want to spend the majority of your time building your lead list and working your business after you are done with your warm market.
I used to recommend that you master one platform such as Facebook before you move onto other platforms. I no longer recommend that.
I believe you should diversify and work at least two platforms if not more.
Don’t overwhelm yourself trying to figure them all out at once, but add one at a time, at present the most used platforms by network marketers for generating leads are Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube, Instagram, Twitter and Tiktok.
The reason it is important to diversify is that these platforms are becoming stricter when it comes to how much of any one activity at a time they allow you to do.
Where before you could sit down and send out 30 friends requests at a time, or like 30 posts, or make 30 comments, you can no longer do that because the algorithms on these platforms will detect you doing so and to them it appears you are a “bot” and not a human being.
They want all actions on their platform to appear natural and not like a robot or machine is doing them. If they think you are using a software to do anything they are going to put you in jail and ban you for some time from using their platform.
So if you diversify your activities between platforms, you can jump on Facebook for 5 minutes, add a couple of friends, like some comments, start some conversations and than head over to LinkedIn and do the same thing for 5 minutes, than head to Instagram and do the same, etc.
How to Use Social Media to Build Your Lead List
The following is a quick overview of the strategy you would use on these platforms. For more in depth training I will put some links at the end of this section for you.
The basis of this method is to simply go out and make friends.
Which is the polar opposite of what most network marketers are doing. Most are out there spamming people like crazy with their MLM opportunity.
They are adding people, and saying stupid things like:
“Hey I see we are like-minded people, here is a business opportunity you will be interested, check it out and let me know what you think, see you on the other side”.
Don’t do that, it is spam, it makes you and the direct sales industry as a whole look terrible.
The Best Leads are Friends First
Always always remember friends first.
The following are 2 ways you can go about meeting people on these platforms:
#1 Suggested Friends – Facebook for example recommends or suggests people that they think you should be friends with.
Don’t just add them. Go look at their profile first.
If they look like a sharp person and someone you would like to work with, like their profile picture or something on their post. Send them a friend request AND a private message.
Always send a private message anytime you are adding someone as a friend or accepting friend requests.
#2 – Join Groups and Pages – Start adding value to these groups. Comment on other peoples posts. Answer questions they have. Be entertaining, friendly and informative.
Start interacting with these people. You will start to get friend requests and people following you. You can start to send friend requests also. Again make sure you message them before accepting or sending a friend request to introduce yourself.
Continue to Build the Relationship
Now that your friend list is growing you want to continue to build the relationship with them.
Do this by checking your news feed a couple of times a day. Comment and like posts that your friends make.
Post on your own profile 1 – 3 times a day. Do NOT make spam posts. Instead, post things that allow people to get to know you.
Things you find interesting and entertaining. Things your friends will find interesting and entertaining. Lifestyle posts that show you out enjoying your life.
People will comment on them and like them. Engage with these people. Respond to their comments and strike up conversations.
Just be a normal human being who is making friends.
How to Approach Your Social Media Lead List About Your Network Marketing Business
These new friends are also now new leads for your business.
The question I get asked is always: “when should I approach my friends about my business”?
There is no definite answer for this besides for: “when the time is right”!
That time will be different for each person. Just gauge how the conversations and interaction is going. If they are engaged with you and communicating than the time is right.
Simply send them a message along these lines:
“Hey Betty-boo, it’s been really fun (cool, great) getting to know you. I just noticed that you live in Dallas Texas. I actually have an internet business that I would actually like to expand to Dallas. I thought I would reach out to you to see if you would be “open” to taking a look at it. If not no big deal, just thought I would ask”.
Really simple. Remember all you are doing is making friends and seeing if they are open to taking a look at an opportunity.
Rinse and repeat, do this over and over again and there really is no way you can fail.
Again here are some more in depth posts on how to do this correctly:
Lead Generation Strategy #3 – Attraction Marketing
I am not going to spend a lot of time explaining this strategy as there is a lot involved with it.
However, the basic principle is you would use internet marketing techniques (blogs, videos, paid ads, etc) to generate leads and have them go through marketing systems designed to get them interested in joining you in your network marketing business.
It’s a very powerful lead generation strategy that can become a serious game changer for you and your business.
However, it does take quite a while to get traction with it, there is a learning curve associated with it and it does cost money.
It’s definitely not for everyone. And if you and your team use the other two methods I described in this post you will have more than enough leads to crush your opportunity. However, if you want to take your marketing up a level than you may find attraction marketing interesting.
If you decide to use this strategy do not have it replace the other two strategies. Instead, add it on top of them. Do it in addition to them not instead of them.
This is important because of that duplication buzz word we talked about. The fact is the majority of your downline will not be able to or want to do this strategy. So if they see that it is all you are doing, they will try to also and your business is going to run into problems.
Personally I recommend you spend 70 – 80% of the time you have set aside to recruit doing the other 2 strategies and only 20 – 30% of your time doing this one.
You can learn more about it here:
And if you are serious about learning how to do attraction marketing I recommend you learn how to do so from these guys, they are the best at it.
There you have it my friend, 3 powerful methods to build a huge network marketing lead list for yourself.
