Today we are going to switch gears from my favorite topic of recruiting and instead dive into the subject of MLM Team Building. There is no question that your success in network marketing or MLM requires that you develop two skill sets.
Yes recruiting is clearly the first skill you need to develop, but almost as important is the skill set of team building.
Some would argue that team building is the more important of the two, and I would not spend much time arguing with them as I get where they are coming from.
No team equals no business… (but no recruiting also means no downline which means no business)
Most people think that this industry is a sales business when in fact nothing could be further from the truth. Success in your MLM business is predicated on your ability to get a large group of people to consistently engage in simple activities over a long period of time.
Being Profitable Requires a Downline
You see this business model is created in such a way that the big pay checks are earned by receiving moderate commissions from a large group of monthly product users (your downline).
In this industry you do not get a huge commission for signing someone up. It would be hard to make a good living on just upfront commissions in this business let alone the walk away live on a beach residual income dream lifestyle this industry promises.
There are business models where selling is how you earn your money, Affiliate marketing would be an example. I love affiliate marketing also and if you prefer to just sell and let your success depend on you and not a team then I suggest you look into it. Here is the best training site to learn how to do it: Affiliate Marketing
But this is Network Marketing and true success in this industry is created by building a TEAM! An organization of product users and business opportunity shares. Meaning distributors who will order and use the product monthly and share the business opportunity daily.
So with all of that in mind let’s get into today’s training. In this post I am going to share with you my top 5 secrets for building a large team.
Secret #1 – Stay in Recruiting Mode
And here comes the prospector and recruiter in me coming out already! Yes in order to build a large MLM business you need to become a lifelong recruiter.
You can never stop prospecting and recruiting. It is what we do. It is the foundation of this industry. It is step #1 to building a large team.
There are two reasons for this:
1) New distributors keep your business alive and well.
I heard Dani Johnson say years ago that she did not care if you were making $1000 per month or $100,000 per month if you were not personally enrolling new distributors monthly than your business was falling backwards.
I concur 100%. I saw it happen in my business and I saw it happen in businesses of other big time leaders. Recruiting is the life blood of any successful MLM business.
2) You absolutely must lead your team by example.
I don’t care if on every training call, company event, Facebook group, team webinar, super Saturday or any other training event you are telling your people over and over again to prospect and recruit; if you’re not doing it yourself they will notice and they will not do it.
There is a crazy insane phenomenon in our industry called Duplication. Put simply what you do duplicates. What you do or do not do your team will do or do not do.
It is insane how it works. If you think you can tell your downline to recruit but you are not doing it, it is not going to happen.
You must lead by example. You must be prospecting daily and recruiting new distributors monthly. And your organization needs to see you doing this. If you recruit they will also!
Let them know you are in the trenches with them. Share your activities and your results. Have your other leaders do the same.
Build a culture within your MLM organization where everyone is locked arms together out there prospecting and recruiting and your business will explode!
Secret #2 – Keep Activities Duplicatable
I have just explained the phenomenon of duplication. It is a very real thing and uncanny how it works.
And you need to keep this phenomenon in mind when you develop the business building activities a team member is to engage in daily.
Remember the secret to your success in this business is:
“It is in your ability to get a large group of people to consistently
engage in simple activities over a long period of time.”
The more you complicate the business building activities the less people will be willing to do them or be able to do them. And the growth of your network marketing business will slow or stop altogether.
What you need to do when you are looking at any new business building or prospecting method is not to ask yourself will it work, but rather will it duplicate.
Will the majority of my team be able to engage in this activity also?
Let’s use an extreme example…
Putting up a bill board sign in time square New York will absolutely result in you being able to generate leads. But can your downline afford to do the same thing? Clearly not.
So here is what happens.
Let’s say you recruit 200 people from your bill board. You sit them down and say ok here is how you build this business. Go and make a list of 100 of your closest family and friends and ask them to look at the business presentation.
I can see the looks on their faces already. Ummm say what? Make a list of my closest family and friends? Ahhh you did not do that. You put up a bill board sign in time square and recruited me. Obviously that is what works, obviously that is how you build this business, BUT I can’t do that I quit!
Yes an extreme example, but it makes the point.
Secret #3 – You Must Use Tools to Train
It is imperative that you do not fall into manger mode.
Many network marketers fall for this trap. They recruit a few new team members and they immediately let it go to their head and think it is their job to now switch hats from recruiting to managing.
Do not do this!
Because of what we just talked about. Your job is to prospect and recruit and show your team you are doing so.
Managing takes too much of your time. Extra time which you do not have.
Most people are building this business part-time on 2 – 3 hours a day. That time needs to be used effectively. Which means you need to be prospecting and recruiting most of that time.
The secret to getting your new distributors trained and up and running is to use tools to train them.
This could be:
- A website
- A newsletter (they can sign up for it on the website)
- A weekly training call
- A weekly get started call for new people
- A Facebook group
- A weekly super Saturday training event
What I recommend is when you recruit a new team member into your MLM business have a 20-minute welcome call with them. Explain to them it is time for them to get trained and stress the importance of them getting through the training ASAP.
Give them an assignment. Tell them you want them to go through the team training site and let you know when they have.
The Cream Rises to the Top.
Serious people will make themselves known to you. Many will come into the business and do nothing. It is just the way it is. You are looking for the serious people to lock arms with and create a big business together.
After you have given your new distributor the assignment to get through the training site and told them to contact you when they do; leave it at that.
If they do not get through the training site and report back to you than they have already shown you that they are not serious. Better to know now then wasting hours on them before finding out.
Do not chase members of your team. Do not try to get them to do what they will not do on their own. It does not work. This is a volunteer army, you are not their boss and you are not their manager.
Point them to tools to train them. Point them to tools to answer their questions. This is doubly important if they have company or customer service questions, point them to your company’s customer service department.
Secret #4 – Let Them Be Who They Are
Because you are reading this post I know you are a serious business builder. You want to make it happen and are going for it. You are probably like me and your goal is to create a massive business.
Your mind set is to probably create a 6 or 7 figure business or bust baby!!
I have news for you…
You are in the minority. The reality is that most people in MLM do not have that mindset.
- Many would be ecstatic with an extra $1000 per month.
- Many would simply like $500 per month.
- Lots would simply like to have their monthly auto ship paid for.
- And believe it or not some are just involved because they like to feel a part of something.
In fact 80% of your downline will fall into one of these areas.
This is the reality and it is OK. It is just the way it is and you need to let everyone on your team be who they are.
Love them where they are at. If you do you will build a large organization of the 80% who feel apart, do some work and order product monthly and that is what you want.
The 20% will build you the big organization and large residual income check, the 80% will maintain it for you.
Which leads to…
Secret #5 – Working With the 20%
As I previously discussed the cream will rise to the top.
The 20%’ers will make themselves known to you.
Now you can spend more one on one time with them. They are your builders, they are your movers and shakers. They are who you want to give quality time to. They will become your inner circle, your leaders.
Give them the time they need to understand how to grow their own large team. It is ok to work closely with them, in fact it is wise to do so.
This does not mean you stop prospecting and recruiting, nope keep on making it rain!!
But when a true 20%’er shows up give them the time they need to make big things happen in their team and yours!
