MLM Sales Training – What You Need to Know

by Robb Corbett 4 Comments

The best MLM Sales Training I could ever give you would be to actually never ever try to sell your mlm business opportunity or product!

Um say what Robb?

Yes my friend, never try to sell or convince anyone to join your business or buy your product. MLM sales Training written above a man thinking with his pen to his lips

Doing so is NOT how you create a successful business; the fact is if you try to learn and use fancy sales tactics you are going to fail.

This is a huge deal my friend and where so many people go wrong in the Multi-Level Marketing (MLM) or network marketing industry.  They mistakenly believe that this is a sales business.

Nothing could be further from the truth.  Success is not created by selling.

MLM is NOT a Sales Business

In fact salespeople have a hard time starting out in this business because they come in believing they will be able to crush it with all of the sales training they have received in their career.

They very quickly find out “that stuff” does not work in their multi-level marketing business.

In fact it might surprise you that the people that tend to do the best starting out are teachers.

The reason for this is that success in network marketing is all about being able to build a team by teaching and training your downline how to do it.

Plus teachers are typically already good at learning so when they join the industry they pay attention to the training they receive and do as instructed whereas sales people think they already have it all figured out.

Now I am not beating up on sales people.  I am a sales person by nature and started my career in sales.

They can do great in this business once they stop trying to use all of the sales training they have received during their career and instead focus on learning the skills required to be successful in this industry.

If MLM is Not Sales What is It?

The best MLM sales training I ever received was when I was taught this is not a sales business but rather a sharing business.

We do not try to sell people on joining our opportunity or buying our product, instead we ask people if they are open to take a look at an opportunity or our product.

If they are open we simply share with them a 3rd party tool created by either the leaders in our company or the company itself.  The 3rd party tool is designed to do all of the “selling & telling” about the opportunity and the product for you.

Note:  This is a bit off topic, but check out this blog post to see my thoughts on whether you should approach people about your opportunity or product: How to Get Customers in network Marketing – The 2 Proven Strategies

But Robb Why Can’t I Just Do The Selling?

Well my friend I can tell you that I am damn good at sales and I am damn good at convincing people they should buy.  But I don’t do it in network marketing.

And the reason for this is very simple…

You can NOT build a large downline by yourself.

You can not sell your way to the top of your compensation plan.

There are industries where your success is contingent on you and you alone.  But in this industry you need a team to help you.

In fact you need a downline that can continue to grow with or without you.  Whether you were in the picture or not the downline has to be able to continue to grow.

So I might be a heck of a sales guy and be able to sell my opportunity to a pile of people, but guess what?

The majority of people that I sold the business to will NOT be able to do what I just did.  They can’t sell. (most people can’t or don’t want to)

If they will not be able to do what I just did they will not make any money and they are going to fail and quit and guess what?  I am back to ground zero with no downline and no business.

What You Do Duplicates (or tries to).

There is a buzzword in our industry called duplication.  It is a very big deal and one you absolutely must understand.

What you do your prospects and downline are going to believe they have to do.

If I am selling to my prospects they are actually thinking:

“Wow Robb is really great at this, he is going to do incredibly well, I’m impressed, BUT I can’t do what he is doing, I can’t sell and I don’t want to sell, this opportunity is NOT for me”.

As a result your are going to sign up far less people into your business then you would if you learned how to prospect correctly by sharing your opportunity using 3rd party tools.

It gets worse…

Let’s say you do manage to convince people to join.  Guess what happens next?

They are going to try to sell to their prospects like you did with them and because they don’t have the sales skills that you have they are going to fail big time, recruit nobody and eventually quit.

And bam you are back at ground zero with no team, downline or business.

It doesn’t even matter if you tell them to share the business with 3rd party tools instead of selling it; if you are selling they are going to think they have to.

Your team simply will not pay any attention to you telling them to use 3rd party tools, because you did not and are not.   What you do duplicates 9 (or tries to).

If you are selling and trying to convince people, your team is going to try to also.

It’s a recipe for failure.

So What is The Solution?

The solution is simple.  You must learn how to build your business the right way and that is done by sharing your opportunity via 3rd party tools with the people who are open to looking at it.

It is not rocket science and it is why the network marketing business model is so great.  It is simple and anyone with desire, determination and commitment can do well at it.

All we do in network marketing to achieve success is:

Meet new people –   Start with the people you know and then learn how to meet new prospects daily.  I have hordes of training on this blog to help you do that.  Here are a couple to start:

Develop a relationship with the people you meet – You do not have to become best friends, just develop some rapport before bringing up your business with them.  Remember friends first.

Ask if they are open to taking a look – Do not over complicate this part, it is as simple as it sounds.  Simply ask them if they are open to looking at an opportunity or product.

It’s as easy as saying:  “Hey I got something you might be interested in, are you open to taking a look”?  Simple.

Give them a 3rd party tool – If they are open to taking a look, provide them with a 3rd party tool that does all of the selling, telling and convincing for you.  (website, facebook group, conference call, webinar, hotel or home presentation, 3-way call, etc)

Follow up with them and collect their decision – They are either going to tell you it is for them or it is not for them; or they might need some more information in order to make a decision.

Most people need at least 3 exposures to your opportunity before they have enough information to decide if it is for them or not, so simply provide them with a new 3rd party tool.

Sign them up – The people who want to join, get them signed up right away, then immediately get them trained and help them get their business off to a fast start.

Rinse and repeat!

Get Trained the Right Way

It really is as simple as that to build a multi-level business.  The very nature of the business requires that it must be a simple process.  Everyone must be able to achieve success if they wish to, or nobody would be able to.

So get trained the right way.  Learn how to prospect and recruit, it is a skill set anyone can learn and it pays big dollars.

Hey Robb I got to say man that is some really good advice you shared in this post. I was playing around with several MLM’s in my time and the only time that I actually sold enough products was when I wasn’t trying to. I would merely talk about a subject until someone started to ask questions.

The funny thing was that I didn’t really know what I was doing, I just happened to be interested in the product and so I would just talk about it all the time around people.

Now reading your article Robb, I can see how it actually worked for me.
Thanks for the light bulb moment.

Hi Robb, absolutely loved this review about building an MLM business. I’ve had an Amway business for over 30 years and have made a steady trickle of income from it but I always felt uncomfortable building it. Like I was trying to foist something off onto my friends when I actually love some of the products and buy them every month. You nailed my problem, I’m a sales person personality and I need to change that to just asking, “Hey I got something you might be interested in, are you open to taking a look?”

How easy is that. Thanks for sharing your awesome knowledge.

Hi Lily, 30 years, that is great!  And you are right and too many people feel that way.  When in the end all we are doing is meeting people, building some rapport and seeing if they are open to taking a look!  Cheers
