When it comes to learning how to get customers in Network Marketing there are actually two very different approaches used by networkers.
Both of them are valid and big businesses and income checks have been created by people using both methods.
It is really up to you which route you want to go when building your business.
I do find that the first approach is a softer and slower method of building a business and getting customers; and I have found over the years that it is typically used by people who are letting fear hold them back from getting into heavy recruiting action.
But again both work so choose which one suits you best and run with it.

Getting Customers Approach #1 – Lead With Your Product
There are trainers and leaders who believe getting MLM customers instead of singing up distributors should be your main focus when building your business. They want you to lead with your product instead of your opportunity.
Go out and find people who just want to use the product and build an organization filled with them.
They achieve this by asking people to check out information on their product or by providing them with product samples and following up with them to see what they think and if they want to become a customer.
If the person wants to the best course of action is to set them up on a monthly product auto ship order, so you don’t have to play store and collect orders from them monthly.
Turn a Customer Into a Business Builder
What they recommend you do next is when you have a loyal customer approach them about the business opportunity associated with the product. I.e. your network marketing opportunity.
It only makes sense that if someone likes the product they may want to promote it themselves and become distributors.
Some networkers will approach their satisfied customers and ask them if they would like to learn how to get their product for free.
It is a valid approach but I do refer to it as the slow business building model. It takes a lot more time to build a large organization and income.
It is not my style and I prefer to get into heavy recruiting action and build fast which is the 2nd approach…
Getting Customers Approach #2 – Lead With Your Opportunity
This method involves focusing all of your time on prospecting and recruiting new distributors into your downline.
Because everyone who says yes to building the business and signs up as a distributor also becomes a customer.
And on top of that you now have a partner who is going to help you build your downline, which means your business and income will grow much faster.
Plus if the person you approach about your business opportunity says no it is not for them, you can then proceed to ask them if they would like to use the product and become a customer instead.
It’s a win win approach to building your business and getting customers.
Why Recruiting is the Best Approach to Getting Customers
There are a bunch of reasons why this strategy is the best approach to building your business and getting customers.
The main reason is that the large commission checks in network marketing or multi-Level marketing (MLM) are earned from the sale of products within a large organization or downline.
Meaning you want as large of an organization under you or in your downline as possible.
The reason for this should be obvious…
Each month these people order products, which means they are all customers regardless of whether they signed up as business builders or only product users.
This method leads with the opportunity and follows up with the product. Whereas the first method leads with the product and follows up with the opportunity.
But by building a team of people who not only use the product monthly but also share the opportunity with others you are going to build a much bigger and profitable business a lot faster.
So the best answer to how to get customers in network marketing is…
Learn The Skill Set of Recruiting
Recruiting is truly where it is at if you want to build a big business.
No one is born a recruiter. It is something everyone learns.
Multi-Level Marketing is not like any other business or career on the planet. It certainly is not sales like some people mistakenly believe it to be.
It is unique unto itself. The skills you require here are not skills you require anywhere else in any other profession.
And recruiting is one of the skills that you must learn if you want to be successful.
Here is the good news…
Recruiting is a Simple Skill Set to Learn
I did not say it was easy. But it is most definitely simple. What is involved with locating and walking a prospect through the recruiting process is simple.
Anyone can do it and anyone can learn to become very good at it; as Jim Rohn said: “If they wish too”.
It will take time, it will take effort and dedication and you will experience setbacks and frustrations, but you can most definitely do it.
People from all walks of life, all backgrounds, all races, career paths, income levels, etc have done it and so can you.
Somebody (probably countless) in your exact same situation has already become good at recruiting in MLM and has gone on to create an incredible income and lifestyle.
And so can you. If you wish too!
Prospecting & Recruiting is My Specialty
When I first came to realize that I could achieve all of my goals in life by simply learning this one skill set I became very excited.
I love prospecting and this blog has hordes and hordes of training on how to do it successfully.
I recommend you spend some time on this blog researching the different methods of prospecting that I train on.
You will find that I do focus primarily on the following 4 methods:
- Warm Market
- Living Your Life
- Social Media
- Attraction Marketing.
Always Start With Your Warm Market
My advice for everyone is to always start with your warm market, which is the people you know.
It is the easiest market to begin with and if done correctly can create a serious income for you.
I was able to create a 6 figure income going only to my warm market. It is a mistake to neglect this market. Do so and your business will suffer in the long run.
You can learn more about why the warm market is so important and how to target it on this post:
Keep Your Eyes Open For Sharp People
You can work the 2nd method that I refer to as living your life at any time while you are working on the other methods.
It is a very simple concept that simply involves keeping an eye open for sharp people as you go about living your day to day life as you normally do.
Get to know the sharp people, develop rapport with them, add them to social media, and when the time is right ask them if they are open to looking at your opportunity or becoming a customer.
Social Media is a Gold Mine
After you have spoken to everyone in your warm market and have determined if they want to join your business or become customers or not it is time to move to social media.
Social media has become a game changer for direct selling in general. It has streamlined and made prospecting and recruiting so much simpler than it used to be.
You can now literally turn on your computer, jump on social media and within 60 minutes easily make 5 – 20 new friends. In the old days of recruiting and getting customers that was unheard-of.
Offline making 2 new friends a day was very aggressive and if you were able to do that you were considered a rock star.
Social media has literally revolutionized the direct sales industry forever.

The Last Strategy is NOT for Everyone
Now the last strategy that I train on is in fact not for everyone and it is not one that you need to do; whereas the other 3 are in my opinion a must.
It is called attraction marketing, which is basically internet marketing but for network marketers.
I do not recommend it for everyone because it has a steep learning curve, it takes time to get any results from, it costs money to implement and most people on your team will not be able to do it as it is not duplicatable.
It should only be performed on top of the other 3 activities if you have extra time but never instead of the other 3 activities.
You can learn more about this method, my thoughts on who should use it and how to do it correctly here on this blog post:
Here is also a post about a company who trains people who do attraction marketing and where I recommend you learn how to do it if you decide it is a strategy you wish to use.
FREE Prospecting Course
If you are serious about getting good at prospecting and becoming a top earner in your MLM I would also recommend that you sign up for my FREE Prospecting Boot Camp.
It is an email series where I cover all of my top strategies for prospecting and sponsoring new distributors and getting customers.
There is no question that customers are the cornerstone of your network marketing business.
Stable and long-lived businesses are built on a loyal customer base.
The fact is many of the distributors that you recruit will eventually stop building the business, and you need them to stick around as customers in order to continue to have a thriving business.
The key is to focus your efforts on leading with the opportunity and following up with the product if they are not interested in the opportunity.
Focus on recruiting new distributors who also become customers and with the people who say no to the opportunity simply ask them if they would like to become a customer.
It really is a no brainer to me and the smartest way to build your downline.
Let me know in the comments if you have any questions on anything we have covered and also let me know if what I have shared helped you out.
