Like most businesses, Finding Your Why in Network Marketing is an important component to your success.
I say this because just like any business it is going to have its difficulties. You are going to become frustrated and there will be times you want to quit.
It is going to take effort, work, money and time and if you do not have a good reason for sticking it out you are simply not going to do what it takes to make it happen.
But network marketing is different from most other businesses; for most other businesses the major “why” for people is the money they invested.
They need to recover the money they spent.
If you buy a franchise, it is going to cost you tens of thousands of dollars if not hundreds of thousands of dollars just to launch it and survive your first year.
Surviving your first year and earning that money back is a huge motivator that will keep you focused on working your business.
The same thing goes for traditional businesses, they have a large upfront cost and in most cases, that investment comes from people’s savings.
Which of course is a huge reason to make the business a success.
Network Marketing is a Different Animal
One of the great things about this industry, which is also believe it or not one of the not so great things about it; is the very low startup cost. In many cases for just a few hundred dollars you can be up and running and in business.
This is good for the obvious reason that it allows average everyday people who do not have the where with all to invest in traditional businesses to be able to get into business for themselves and create a serious income and lifestyle.
But it is also not so good because it is easy to quit.
Most people will spend the same amount of money it takes to join a network marketing opportunity on a good night out on the town.
Going out to dinner with a couple of friends and having a few drinks can easily cost a couple of hundred dollars if not more. Which in many cases is what it costs to get started in an opportunity in this industry.
So when the going gets tough it is easy to simply say “oh well, I guess it was not for me, I’ve learned my lesson but thankfully I only lost $200” and throw your hands up in the air and quit.
You Must Know Your Reason Why
In order to survive this inevitable feeling that everyone in the industry feels at one point or another, you need a very BIG why; which is the very core foundational reason you wanted to get into the business in the first place.
What made you join?
Was it you hate your job?
Do you need to earn an extra $500 a month to make paying the bills less stressful?
Do you have children and is their university or college bill something that you will very shortly have to deal with?
Do you want to buy a new house, new car, take that family vacation you feel you owe your family?
Do Some Serious Soul Searching
In order to find what really motivates you, you need to do some serious soul-searching.
What is your greatest desire? Maybe your why will be found there.
What is your greatest pain? What keeps you up at night worrying and stressing?
There really is no rocket science to this. What do you want the most in life that this business can provide for you?
That is your reason for doing it.
Your why needs to be so important to you that it makes the pain of quitting worse than the pain of having to put the work in, the pain of the frustration you are feeling at the present.
For me one of the reasons I do this business is for my children. Every time I get frustrated, I look at photos of my children.
I am doing this for them and that is a huge motivator to keep on keeping on.
Having to tell them we can’t get that nice house, or we can’t take that vacation or I can’t help them with their education because my business was too hard and I quit is a HUGE motivator for me.
After You Have Decided
Write it down. Get it on paper.
Place it in many places. Have it as your screen saver on your phone and your computer. Tape it to your fridge. Carry it in your wallet.
Any time you get frustrated and think you cannot do this pull it out and look at it. Remember why you joined in the first place.
As simple of an activity as this sounds, it will help you stay motivated, and really in the end all determining your “why” is, is an exercise to keep you motivated.
It is a great exercise but there are other things you can do as well. And to help you stay fired up and on track to reach your goals I am going to give you 3 more strategies you can employ today….
OD on PD
One of the biggest recommendations I would make is make a commitment to yourself to engage in a daily regime of personal development.
When I say personal development, I am referring to reading, watching and listening to motivational material, self-help stuff!
I am addicted to personal development otherwise known as PD.
In fact, you should OD on PD. Get as much of it as you can!
As the late great Jim Rohn said: “Work harder on yourself then you do your job”.
PD is what has kept me going more so than any other activity over the years.
- I strive to read at least one chapter every morning from a motivational book such as think and grow rich or the success principals by Jack Canfield, etc.
- I watch a motivational YouTube video before I start working on my business.
- When I am driving in my car I listen to self-help podcasts and before I go to bed at night I like to read a few pages of my book again.
What you focus on expands!
When you focus on success and staying motivated, you will find success and you will stay motivated.
If I have a bad day or a bad prospecting call or somebody quits and it gets me down or frustrated I bang out some quick PD to get my head right.
Every single leader I know in this industry is a major advocate for this strategy. They all do it in one form or another and they all recommend that everyone on their team does so as well.
Success leaves clues and this is a big one!
Stay Connected to Your Team
If you are on a good team they will typically hold weekly training calls, quarterly events and many teams now have Facebook groups where team members can connect and learn from each other as well as keeping each other motivated.
Take advantage of all of these type of activities.
Being around other people who are on the same journey as yourself will keep you on track, moving forward and motivated.
Get Into Action
People ask me how I was able to achieve success so quickly in my business and the answer is I got into action very quickly and stayed there.
There is a funny thing that happens when you get into action, you get results!!
And when you get results you get motivated to continue getting results and as a result you stay in action.
As you start to get results your team starts to get results and your business begins to go into momentum and that is when really great things happen and big businesses and pay checks are built.
