I can remember like it was yesterday running out of people I knew to share my network marketing business with and than desperately trying to figure out how and where to buy network marketing leads for my business.
It was not a fun experience in the slightest and due to my complete lack of knowledge on the subject it became an extremely frustrating and expensive experience.
In this post I am going to save you from going through that terrible experience by sharing my thoughts on whether you should buy MLM leads, some of the types you can buy as well as strategies you can implement to generate your own,(which is the better option).
There is no question that leads are the lifeblood of your network marketing business; the cornerstone.
We are in the recruiting business, it is what we do. No leads means no business.
It doesn’t make any difference if you are earning Fifty dollars per month of Fifty Thousand you must have people to share your business with or you will be in trouble.
Before I get into my thoughts on buying and generating leads I do need to touch on a very important subject that you simply can not ignore if you really want to become a success in your network marketing business…
You Must Start With Your Warm Market
I know I know I know, you have heard it before.
Your upline has probably harped at you over and over again to share your business opportunity and product with everyone you know.
I get it that you probably don’t want to hear that anymore and that is why you are looking into buying leads. I felt the exact same way.
So I am not going to dwell on this subject. However, you do need to hear and understand a couple of important things before you jump into buying MLM leads.
The reason they tell you to start with your warm market is because it works! It really does.
However the secret to your success in doing so is to make sure you are doing it the right way.
Most uplines have no clue how to work the warm market. They are clueless and are doing it all wrong.
They basically tell you to harass your friends and family. They have you chasing people who told you no over and over again. Which results in people getting ticked off and ignoring you.
That is no fun, and it is exactly why people hate working their warm market.
I was fortunate enough to work with 2 legends in this industry. 2 of the top leaders and trainers in direct selling.
They showed me how to work my warm market the right way and as a result I had big success doing so. I earned a nice 6 figure income within my first year working my warm market alone.
So yes it works if you do it correctly.
Even if you have been in the direct sales industry awhile and totally blew it with your warm market. Using these strategies, which I can guarantee is a totally different approach than what your upline probably taught you, you can go back to them again doing it right this time.
In fact, it is important that you do.
Not Only Does it Work, It is Crucial to Your Success
Not only is it important, I would go so far to say that it is crucial you know how to prospect your warm market the right way if you want your business to grow.
The reason is because if approached the right way, the warm market is the simplest way to build your business which means most people on your team will do it and see some success doing so.
You see the key to your long term success is getting your team into action and growing also.
You need your team recruiting other people. You can not do it all yourself. Your downline must be able to sponsor people as well.
This is why it is so important to keep your business building activities simple. And working the warm market is the simplest activity of all.
You might start buying MLM leads. You might start generating your own leads. But guess what? The majority of your team will not.
But the majority of your team will approach the people they already know if you show them how to do it the right way and they get results doing so.
I trust this makes sense because it is such an important part of you building a successful business; regardless of what the online “gurus” who are trying to sell you their book, course or lead generation system try to tell you.

OK on with the show…
Should You Buy MLM Leads
The short answer is it is 100% up to you.
I am not one of these network marketing trainers who will tell you it doesn’t work. It does work. It is a strategy that has been proven to work by many people in the industry.
People have built million dollar businesses by buying and calling cold leads.
However, I will tell you that it is a hard way to build your business and that I prefer other methods.
But if you do decide to work cold leads understand it is going to 100% be a numbers game.
You are going to go through a ton of people who are not going to be interested, people who are going to be rude and people who are going to waste your time.
But if you work the numbers you will find people who will sign up. And eventually you are going to find quality people.
Just make sure you go into working purchased leads with the right mindset.
Understand that most of the people on the lists you buy will not be quality prospects. It is just the way it is.
Go into it with the attitude that you are just going to smile & dial. Work through the lists quickly, weeding through the unqualified time-wasting people on it and find the qualified people who are serious about starting a business.
Things to Know About Buying Network Marketing Leads
There are a few things you should know when you purchase leads from a broker.
The first thing is that you are not the only person the leads are being sold to. Brokers sell their leads to more than one buyer.
When you buy from a broker, they should tell you how many other people each list will be sold to.
Typically, most leads in my experience are sold to 3 buyers. So you and 2 other people.
Surprisingly this is not a terrible thing, because in my experience most people buy leads and never call them. Something which totally blows my mind but is true.
And even if they do call them they do so having taken no training on how to approach these people the right way and flat out blow it.
If you take the time to get trained on how to work these prospects the right way you will be light years ahead of the other 2 people who are calling them, if they even call them at all.
The biggest thing to get trained on is what to say to these people…
Be Scripted But Don’t Use a Script
Write that down my friend. Be scripted, but don’t use a script.
This applies regardless of what type prospect you are targeting, whether it is your warm market, purchased leads or ones you generate on your own.
- Know what to say in each situation.
- Know what you are looking to accomplish.
- Know the general flow of how you want the conversation to go.
But do not read from a script. Do not sound like a telemarketer.
You can check out the following post for what to say to warm market prospects and leads you generate on your own:
The best recruiting script to get the most results
When it comes to working cold leads, you want to get right to the point. Do not waste your time asking about their family or friends. You do not have the time to try to develop rapport with these people. It will be a waste of your time if you do.
You want to keep the conversation very business based. You must stay in control of the conversation. You are the business person responding to their request for information about an opportunity. You are not bothering them, it is they who requested a call.
Understand these people responded to some sort of ad or website advertising home based business opportunities.
They were either searching for opportunities or they saw an ad listed about a home based business opportunity that they than responded to. They filled in their contact information and indicated that “Yes” they wanted to be contacted about an opportunity.
The Best Script to Use
The best script to use is “something” like the following:
“Hi is this Betty? Hi Betty this is Robb Corbett, I am calling you because you requested information from one of my sites about starting a home based business. What can I do for you”?
They will say whatever they are going to say, it really does not matter.
When they are done you say something like:
“OK Betty we get a lot of people requesting information from us and only have time to work with a few people at a time. On a scale of 1 – 10 how serious would you say you are?”
If they are not at least an 7, simply give them a link to check out your presentation and give them your phone number. Tell them to watch it and if they want more information or are interested in getting started to give you a call.
Then move on. You are looking for people who are dead serious. 7 – 10’s.
If they tell you they are a 7 – 10 take them to the next step which is to basically interview them.
How to Interview Your MLM Leads
Remember you are in charge. You need to act like you are Bill Gates hiring someone to come work for him at Microsoft.
Bill would not try to convince or sell you on joining, no he would interview you to see if you were worthy.
This is the attitude you need to have when buying network marketing leads. You have something they need, not the other way around. You do not need them, they need you.
So have a series of interview questions lined up, 5 -6 questions is fine.
- Why do you want to start a home based business?
- How much money are you looking to earn?
- Have you been in network marketing before?
- What do you do for a living now?
- How much money do you have saved up to build a business?
- How many hours per day can you put into working a business?
Learn the Powerful GAP Strategy
If the person you are speaking with gives you a hard time, tries to take control of the call or sounds like they are wasting your time, GAP them.
GAP means:
Grab
A
Pen
Just say: “Hey Betty, do you know what, here is what I will do for you, grab a pen, here is a website, take a look at it and if you like what you see call me back and we can talk more about it”.
Don’t waste your time.
You are the boss, stay in charge and if someone is wasting your time or not a good prospect GAP them.
Remember your goal is to burn through the list as fast as you can to find the quality prospects.
The next thing to know is there are different types of leads you can buy, some are better quality than others and they come with a different price tag.
Some of the most popular are:
Phone Interviewed MLM Leads
These people not only fill out an online form requesting information about a home based business but the broker actually has one of their employees pick up the phone and call the prospect and interviews them.
These are good for a couple of reasons.
The first reason is you know that they are a real person. The broker has actually called them, their number is a real phone number and the person is a real person.
The second reason is they have been interviewed.
It is not an extensive interview by any means but they are asked a few questions and have responded positively indicating they are interested in further information. They did not hang up on the broker and they answered positively to the questions.
These prospects are definitely higher quality than ones that are not interviewed. They also do tend to cost more as a result.
Local Leads
These are typically also higher quality.
They are local, meaning they live near you. This is powerful as it creates some rapport between you and the person. You have something you can both relate to.
Living in the same city provides you with something in common. Instead of someone from across the country calling them, it is someone who lives just down the street.
It also allows you to build a local team which is a powerful strategy because you can get together with your team for training sessions and hold business presentations.
Most network marketing leaders that I know build local before building long distance. That is what I did and it worked well.
Real Time MLM Leads
These are powerful because you get access to the prospects hot right off the press.
The real time means as soon as the lead is generated you get notification. You get an email saying Betty just filled out the form requesting information about how to make money from home.
The key is to pick up your phone as soon as you get the email and call with them while they are still hot and in the mindset of building a business.
MLM Genealogy Leads
Sometimes you will come across a broker who is selling genealogy lists. This is a list of people who are presently in or were in a network marketing company.
The rationale is these people already know about the direct sales industry, and appreciate it for the great business model that it is, and as a result should be more open to looking at your opportunity than other leads.
I will warn you these can actually be challenging leads to work.
In many cases since the people on these lists have not been verified or interviewed the contact information is outdated and the phone numbers and emails are wrong.
You will also find that when you reach people on these lists that they will want to know where you got their name from because they did not sign up for information.
Also in many cases the people on the list will still be actively building their business and end up trying to recruit you.
You can find some good people who if they join with you can create some serious growth in your business, but just be warned it can be very challenging to work these genealogy lists.
So is it Worth Buying Network Marketing Leads or Not?
Again that is up to you as the business builder. It is your call.
If you have the right mindset, can handle dealing with a lot of low quality prospects, don’t mind getting a ton of “no’s” before you get a “yes” and don’t mind spending money than you might be the perfect candidate to work leads.
When I worked them I did it as an additional strategy to the other strategies I worked. I would spend 30 minutes a day calling them, but I never spent all of my time doing so. I also typically used this broker.
For me I found that generating my own leads both offline and online was a better use of my time.
Which is what we are going to look at next…
The Best Plan is to Generate Your Own MLM Leads
There is no question that the highest quality prospects outside of your warm market are leads that you generate on your own.
In fact, I stopped buying leads when I learned how to generate my own because it was simply a waste of my time and money to do so.
You will get a lot more people joining your business when they know, like and trust you and that is part of the process when you generate your own.
You have none of those things going for you when you buy leads.
How to Generate Leads Offline
There are a whole host of ways to generate leads offline.
Some of my favorite are simple methods that do not take up a lot of your time and you can include many of them into your existing day to day activities.
I am not going to go into details on all of the ways you can do that in this post, however on this post I reveal 7 of my top ways of doing so for Free!
How to Generate Leads Online
Generating my leads online is where I spend most of my time when prospecting for my network marketing business.
I find it to be the best use of my time. I can generate a ton more leads this way and they are of super high quality.
I train on a few ways to do this but the top two are using Social Media & Internet Marketing.
I recommend everyone in the industry use social media for prospecting because it is not only a very powerful way to build your business, it is also extremely duplicatable and everyone on your team can do it successfully if they want to.
Internet marketing is a different story and it should only be used by people who are very very serious about building their business and want to go the extra mile.
There is a steep learning curve associated with it and it does take time to get results, but when you do start getting results it can be a game changer for your business and can take you to the next level.
You can learn about my social media strategies here:

Getting leads in the warm market is something I still need to work on. Do these tips mostly apply to MLM or also to other online marketing like affiliate marketing?
I didn’t know that the leads you can buy come from people who gave their contact info, so who want to receive information and want to be contacted. That should make it easier for the marketer. It’s hard to believe that someone would buy leads and then not call them … On the other hand, knowing that the same leads are sold to 2 or 3 different buyers creates a certain competition or pressure, doesn’t it? How do you avoid annoying those leads if all three marketers are going to call them and give them an overload of offers?
In my experience most don’t call the leads so you really don’t have to worry about it. Outside of that just be on your game, be more professional and be scripted. Competition is good as it can make the prepared person stand out above the crowd. Hope that helps.
Hey Robb, thanks for sharing the tips! These are golden tips on acquiring leads – even if you’re not in the MLM business.
I had been in an MLM before but soon realized that I’m not up for the talking and meeting part (I’m a very introverted person) but it was a very good experience.
It used to be like a Tupperware party kind of thing with MLM but you definitely gave very good tips on how to acquire cold leads! Love it!
Hopefully more people will learn how to acquire leads online – i think the best option nowadays.
Again, thanks for the share!
